Master's thesis project proposals in Sundsvall

The FORMAS-funded project Kall-PN aims to find students who are planning to write a master's thesis in the spring of 2026. The work would be based at Fillan Wastewater Treatment Plant in Sundsvall, managed by MittSverige Vatten & Avfall.

The project Kall-PN was funded by FORMAS and several municipal water and wastewater organisations in northern Sweden. It aims to develop a resource-efficient wastewater treatment process with the lowest possible climate impact, adapted to northern Swedish conditions, where low water temperatures and fluctuating flows during snowmelting periods present particular challenges.

Kall-PN will test technical solutions for removing nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater, model these processes, and optimize them to reduce resource consumption and nitrous oxide emissions.

The two master's thesis project proposals are:

• Proposed Title: Optimization of Operating Parameters for the Production of Internal Carbon Source through Sludge Fermentation in Cold Climate – Application at Fillan Wastewater Treatment Plant

  The student will be supervised by Linda Kanders, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and Malin Tuvesson, MittSverige vatten & Avfall.
